Who the hell opened my window? My eyes are barely open, but the sun somehow found its way into them, shining away any lingering hint of sleep. A blurry figure stood fidgeting with items on my desk. Hearing me, the figure turns around revealing Nikki's familiar face. Exhaling with relief, I sit up. I'm in bed...
"You're okay!" My friend exclaimed and threw her arms around me. I hugged her back confused.
"What happened? Why are you here?"
"You missed classes today. I wanted to make sure you didn't get sick." an innocent smile followed her words.
"Oh." I raise my hand to touch my head, but pull away at contact. It feels bruised. Nikki noticed and frowned.
"I found you on the ground." she said in a low serious voice. "What were you doing last night?"
"I'd like to know too." I said looking out the window. No more words were spoken. neither of us knew what happened so we didn't anything to say.
A knock at the door sounded. Nikki answered, letting in Mary and Jazz. They bounced up to me informing me on everything that happened during classes today. Nikki hung around near the end of my bed eyeing something on my desk. I turn my focus back to the chattering girls before me.
"Seriously Courtney you should have been there!" Jazz said with a slight shade of red on her cheeks. Mary chimed in "Yeah, there were new students!"
"From around here?" I ask her.
"Kinda.. Well, there's a girl and her twin brothers. She said that when they were young their parents took them away from Wizard City, but the three came back on their own when they were" she paused. "abandoned."
"Oh." Probably the stupidest thing to say. I try to leave the uneasy topic. "What school?"
Jazz decides to take a turn gossiping "I know the girl is Storm. Her name is Taryn. She said her brothers are Fire and Ice." She thinks a moment then continues talking, gradually increasing her speed. "I don't get it 'cause that's three different schools derived from the two parent schools. But anyway, isn't it kinda funny that the twins are opposites? I thought it was funny. You know what's not funny? How gorgeous the fire twin is!" Mary nudged Jazz in the ribs. She moves away from Mary. "Hey- he's hot! No pun intended."
I laughed with them. Nikki slowly joined the conversation and began sharing things she knew about the new students. It was a relaxing time, however there was a lingering feeling of uneasiness.
